The Emmy® Award winning, 'The Pallisers' is based on the novels of Anthony Trollop.  26 Episodes were broadcast on television by the BBC and 22 episodes were shown on PBS.  The BBC version contains additional scenes and actors which were cut from the PBS version to allow time for the 'foreword' and 'after-word' by (the late) Sir John Gielgud.  Happily, these scenes have been restored to Acorn Media's video tape and DVD release of this masterpiece.

When the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) first aired 'The Pallisers', affordable consumer video cassette recorders did not exist.  When the series was rebroadcast for the second and last time on PBS, we serendipitously owned a VCR.  Blank video tapes were then in short supply.  And, trying to get eleven of them at one time was a challenge!

Why a cast list?

Over the years, SWMBO [In the words of Rumpole of the Bailey, 'She Who Must Be Obeyed'] has watched the entire series so many times that we literally wore out three successive generations of copies of our initial recording.  What with the program appearing so many times on our telly ['television'], yours truly could not help but become interested, involved and - ultimately - another fan of the series.

Countless times when watching British television programmes ['programs'], we have seen actors and wondered...  Who is that actor?  Did that actor appear in 'The Pallisers'?  What character did he/she play in 'The Pallisers'?  Thus, as devoted fans, we prepared the PBS cast list for our private use many years ago.  The list also facilitates locating the particular video tapes which contain a particular 'story line' for viewing.  Over time, we have found it to be an invaluable and essential reference to 'The Pallisers.'

Why not alphabetical order?

While an alphabetical list might at first seem appropriate, we have found that arranging the characters in order of the episodes in which they first appeared is more useful.  This arrangement is an aid to keeping track of the many plots and subplots which Trollop so meticulously wove together.

Can I print the lists?  How?

Recognizing that we retain the copyright to this formatted list, you have our permission to print out a copy for your own personal and non-commercial use.

The width of the lists results from the selection of the smallest font size which is likely to be viewable in all browsers.  As such, it unfortunately will not fit a standard A4 or letter size paper width when printing in the portrait mode.

There are several ways around this....

The BBC Cast

This is the complete cast of  'The Pallisers' as originally broadcast by the BBC...  the actors, the characters they played, and the episodes in which they appeared.

Note that both versions of the cast list use an asterisk to indicate those actors and characters who did not appear in or were not listed in the credits of the PBS broadcast.

The PBS Cast

This is the complete cast of  'The Pallisers' as broadcast in the USA on PBS... the actors, the characters they played, and the episodes in which they appeared.

To facilitate comparisons - for those who are so inclined - between the BBC and PBS versions, this PBS Cast is arranged in the same order as the BBC Cast.

Since the release of the uncut version by Acorn Media, this cast list of the PBS version is provided for historical purposes and for the benefit of those who are kindred spirits... true aficionados of this series.
