Introduction - 2 Day Tour - 3 Day Tour - 9.Day.Tour - 20.Day.Tour25.Day.Tour - 29.Day.Tour - 31.Day.Tour34.Day.Tour

This was our very first trip to London.  That was back in the days when Pan Am ruled the skies between Britain and America, Boeing 747s had just entered trans-Atlantic service, shillings & half crowns still circulated alongside the new decimal coinage, and our only source of tourist information was in the form of brochures from sightseeing tour companies.  If the British Tourist Authority existed back then, we certainly did not know about them.

Our 'must see' list was established by making a master list of the venues shown in the tour company brochures.  The venues were ranked based on the number of tour companies that included each stop in their tour.  The most visited venues made our final list.  Since we were doing this holiday ['vacation'] independently, the next problem was to select a time of day to see each venue.  If the majority of the commercial tours visited a venue in the morning, we planned to be there in the afternoon.  Thus, we hoped to avoid a crush ['extreme crowd'] at most stops.  Anticipating a day or two of possible inclement weather, the list was further broken down into indoor versus outdoor activities.  The objective was to do the outdoor list early on as weather permitted.

All this was many years ago (also referred to as the 'dark ages'.)  Although London has been a great tourist destination since the time of the Romans, there is so much more to see today than when we made our first visit.  And, our subsequent visits to London - details of which are on these Tour pages - have more than made up for the limitations of our first holiday in Britain.

One last thought...  If we knew then, what we know now, we would have used portions of two days for day trips from London to Windsor Castle (Day 3) and to Hampton Court (Day 8).  Such oversights have long since been corrected many times over.
