'Lucky' was gun platoon Bucanneer 6 (with skull and cross bones). I flew his wing. The gunnies from the 155th gave us our initial orientation flight. We escorted C141's with our Huey-C's in late evening into the Air Base. 141's had all lights out. Dangerous. We paid social calls in the Ia Drang, Kontum, Cheo Reo, Plei Me, Ban Me Thuot, An Khe, and Chu Pong Mountain. We thought very dangerous, then the next tour I became a B Troop Cdr 2/17 101st. Name: Jim Kopko Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Time: 1998-11-11 23:28:53 Comments: Served at Camp Holloway 1967 and 1968. I tell people Day and Night weren't 2 different times but 2 different places. During the day you could go and do most whatever you want, but after dark it was like you were in another world. Also, the earlier in the day that the Vietnamese would leave the Camp to go home, the more you worried what the rest of the day and that night had in store. I never knew if the Vietnamese that worked in the camp during the would be the ones sending us 82 mm mortars that night. Camp Holloway was a rather primative camp compared to places like the Air Force Base that had paved streets, a library and a snack bar. It seemed we went for months without hot water for the showers. "Monday Monday" and "My Girl" were my favorites. But the beer was cheap and we lucked out and stayed alive. |

We defeated the Viet Cong, economically destroyed the communist and cut off the spread of further infiltration into other nations the inhumane destruction of innocent civilians. I think that we contributted to the strengthening of our nation just as much as WWI, WWII, Korean Conflict, and Desert Storm. I am encouraging all Americans to salute the Vietnam veteran for their outstanding performance during difficult political times for a job well done. We stopped the communist, now let's move on and see if we can heal the wounds from agent orange. |

Flew mostly S.O.G. missions out of Kontum and Dak To. It would be great to talk to some of the guys. Does anyone know if McAda ever left or just stayed on for another 5 years? I've talked to more S.O.G. guys than Crocs since 1969. |

Spent a few nights at Camp Holloway. Was always glad to get back to Lane and my own bed! I do apologize for stealing gas from the Mess Hall for the lamps in the nasty old tents they put us up in, for almost "cold cocking" the Mess Sargent when he caught me, and for all nice new foot lockers from that nasty tent that we left with the next day. Still have one with me as a reminder. Always thought we had it rough, but my heart goes out to those who spent thier nights at Dak To and all the LZ's I can no longer remember. Still remember all the flare shutes on the jungle canapy as we went on resupply each morning during TET. |

I am looking forward to seeing each one of you at the reunion October 1-4 in St. Louis, MO. To all 189th and 604th vets, Vern owes us the beer for having the largest number their last year SO let's have even a larger attendance this year. Most of all come expecting to have fun telling old stories which seem as though they were yesterday. I attended for my first time last year and I think it was the best healing I have had being with friends who understood. Once again fellows if you haven't made plans to attend the reunion now is the time. This year I believe Vern has a very interesting plan for us to meet and have a good time. See you at the reunion. |
