Name: Richard J. Newell Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Time: 2000-07-04 02:29:05 Comments: I'm glad I've discovered several of these Vietnam veteran web sites. I appreciate all the work you folks have done to keep alive the memory of the sacrifice many Americans made by obeying our government's orders. I was stationed at Camp Holloway for the first three months of 1971 with "B" Troop, 7/17 Cavalry; my final nine months were spent at Dong Ba Thin in the Cam Ranh Bay area. I went through flight training with WOC Class 70-37. I'd be glad to here from anyone who went through training or served in Vietnam with me. |

I don't know if anyone will read this, but I'm curious to know if the Camp Holloway airfied is now the Pleiku airfield. I visited it in January along with the old field at Dak To( which was just covered totally in casavar which was drying).Figured the Pleiku Airfield had to be part of an old US base and wondered if it was Camp Holloway. Name: David Harrington USAF Ret Website: Referred by: Other Veteran's Web Site From: Fort Walton Beach, FL Time: 2000-06-16 13:48:34 Comments: Brings back memories, good and bad. Many of the Air Commandos here close to Hurlburt have gone back to Thailand and Laos.We still keep in close touch with what we lovinly call OUR FRIENDS. Thru the McCoski Foundation we have been able to help no small amount of them. I will never forget a small church that had been cut to ribbons overlooking Dalat. Viet Cong had taken refuge there and in the process of forseably moving them out the church came out 2nd best. I climbed up on the roof after it was all over and in front of the door was a large piece of red sandstone with a white cross mounted on it. In being blown off the front of the church it had landed face up in one piece exept for a row of 50 cal stitched diagonally acrossed the front. I got my pictue which maybe I shouldnt have. It always brings back the memories of the dead on both sides. They had families and loved ones too. Whenever I go to the wall I pray that they honored their dead the ways we honored ours. I dont hate them and when I go back again this time my wife goes with me as she to has suffered enough thru me. She to needs to understand and I owe it to her. May they all rest in peace, whatever side they served on. David ANYTIME-ANYPLACE |

Name: Mike Maylone Website: Referred by: From VHFCN Site From: Erlensee, Germany Time: 2000-06-07 06:46:02 Comments: Great site, brought back lots of memories! I was in the 561st GS Co. from Aug 67 to Aug 68 and spent most of the year driving a 5 ton out of Pleiku, either to Qui Nhon and back or else running resupply to Kontum and Dak To. I can remember Corporal Bear at the EM club (he got promoted to Sgt while I was there), and had the dubious honor of pulling perimeter guard at the ASP the night the TET offensive started. I have a lasting hearing loss due to the explosion of several pallets of C4 right behind the bunker I was in. Is there anyone else out there that worked at the supply dump during that time? Would be glad to hear from you. Keep up the good work on the site... I will be back! |

Co. as a door gunner in Kontum. We were north of Camp Holloway. I was TDY with the 4th Inf. Div. as security detail protecting the compound at Kontum when I stopped flying. Was wounded in Jan. 1968 (TET Offensive), and taken to 71st Med.Evac. in Pleiku. Guys (misfits)from Holloway and Pleiku in general, were sent to my unit for punishment. I guess their CO's thought they would never make it out of there. Quite a few didn't. My best recollection of Holloway is when we would deliver body bags to graves registration, and steel beer for the boys up north. I remember decking an E-6 for 6 cases, it was worth it! He worked in supply and wouldn't give me a pair of boots after seeing that the ones on my feet were rotting off. Nice guy, real compassion for a fellow vet. From Oct. 1967 to Oct.1968, it was one hellava ride! Welcome Home! |

My uncle, George "Woody" Carmel served with the 119th in 65-66... He doesn't talk to much about it, but I have always been somewhat fascinated by this time in military history. I can remember as a child, staring for hours at a model of a huey he made...with the "black dragon" painted on the front. To all those who served, I say "Thank you." For those who returned I say "Welcome home." And for those who made the ulitimate sacrifice I say "You will not be forgotten". |

Name: David Wallace - Memories Of Camp Holloway Website: Crafton Hills College Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Yucaipa , Ca Time: 2000-01-26 18:14:15 Comments: Hello to all the brave and daring souls of the 119th Aviation Company at Camp Holloway. I was with the 545th Trans Det., and was the engine mechanic for all the ships of the 119th, from March 1968- Jan. 1969. The Gators and the Croc's have always been in my thoughts. A special hello to Don Pemberton, a crewcheif whose gunship was shot down . Don was taken to Japan to recover. Hello to Ken Armstrong from OK., and Kerry Evert from Newport Beach, Ca. They helped to keep the ships of the 119th flying too. Capt. Dean was my CO, and he was one hell of a good test pilot. I flew with him night and day. It was in Oct. or Nov. when we experienced the sorrow of losing some friends. My prayers are with the families of the crew members whose helicopter crashed while coming home from a mission in Cambodia. I believe they were taking special forces over the boder to lay Personnel sensors. |
