I served at Camp Holloway from Oct. '67 - Oct. '68 with the 119th AHC as the gun platoon leader, Crocodiles. I was Croc Six. We worked for the 4th ID and the SF's SOG mission out of Kontum. Your web site brought back many good memories, and some painful ones, but I can live with both. We did our jobs, did them well, and I have no regrets about my own service. Thanks to the WO's who trained me to fly in combat (Payne, Brown, Sloan) and to our enlisted crews, I am still alive! We were a great team. I salute all who served honorably "in the good old days when times were bad!" |

AIR LIFT PLATOON in 1965 to about May of 1966 than I went to the 282nd. At the time I was with the 52nd I hung out with a person named Davis he worked in the dental office. I found a picture of him and myself taken in town, so maybe I can try and find him. He was a good freind we would sit around and shot the brezze, play cards, and just hang out. The last time I saw him was when him, myself, and some other guys in our comp. went into town. There was a little trougle in town with the South Viet. soldiers, and Davis got separated from us. We looked around but we could not find him. We found out the next day he got mixed up in the upriseing and he receved some eye damage and was shipped out and then home. If anyone might know him or knows of him please contact me. MRRONMO@alo.com |

Used to volunteer as courier to go to Holloway every chance I could to get out of red mud and into an NCO club with "running water and a real rest room". Thanks to all who were there. I was reading the VHFCN digest, noticed your site and had to check it out. You have done a damned fine job putting together your website. The only thing missing is the red dirt and sound of rotor blades! I was a doorgunner with the 189th AHC, Ghost Riders out of Holloway in 68-69 and Pleiku was off limits my whole tour there. We had to fly to An Khe or Ban Me Thuot just to get our itch scratched and that required major navigational errors. Every slick crew there wanted a ride in a snake! You should have sold tickets for a ride and went home with a pocket full of money. Snakes looked good. Slicks just looked like slicks. Ray Hoagland 189th AHC, Ghost Riders, Camp Holloway |

Name: Jim Stewart Website: Referred by: Via Search Engine From: Morgantown, West Virginia Time: 2000-08-26 16:20:55 Comments: A mere 34 years ago (6/6/66 - 6/5/67) I was a turbine engine specialist (Chinook, CH47) with the 179th Aviation Company, 402nd Transportation Detachment stationed at Camp Holloway, near Pleiku, South Viet Nam. Actually we left the USA on 6/6/66 on the USS John Pope and after few days (10 +/-) we arrived at Cam Rahn Bay. After a few weeks of basic sandbag training, etc. while "camping out" near Dong Ba Thin, we moved all our "Hooks" (they came with us from Fort Benning) to Camp Holloway in the Central Highlands (near the city of Pleiku). My DEROS date was 6/5/67 --I left Viet Nam, arrived at Fort Lewis, Washington (got a new dress uniform), and was discharged on that day ... sweet. Whenever I hear the sound of rotor blades, I know immediately if it is from a Chinook or a Huey. It seemed to me that I flew every day - on test-flights after engine repairs or as a crew member (read nervous door-gunner) on "trips" requiring our "Hooks" to go (and occassionaly stay) a long way from Camp Holloway -- crew members who were also engine specialists were real handy on those long "sleep overs!" It would be great to get e-mail members of the 179th / "four-o-deuce" -- in particular, my good buddies Bill Gregory and John Gibel and ... all of you. Boy, that was a time. |

Later, I was caught in the DEROS shuffle and changed hootches to the 17th Avn Co.(Caribou) which was an attached unit in support of the Ist Cav. Double-deuces, mortars and sappers in the bunkers are vivid in my mind, as well as "our" Tower #75, right at the corner of the perimeter, next to the highway and the ARVN base across that. Incurring ARVN wrath with "mini-mortars" banging on their tin roof. I'm still looking for my brothers, "Johnny" and Ben Hernandez, and I hope to run into more than those on these pages. God bless you for this site. |
