He was with the 170th Aviaton Company, 17th Avaition Group, 52nd Avaition Battalion, 1st Aviation Brigade. His helicopter went down in Cambodia 3/24/70 during an extraction and he is MIA. I have adopted him through "Operation Just Cause" and it would mean alot to me if I had a photograph of him. Thanks to you all for everything! He also told me that Charlie Berryhill just returned from taking his son to West Point. Can you believe that dude. Hell, I guess if in '65-66 us NFG's and "Charlie" couldn't kill him he deserved to really get risky and get married and have a son at his age. When it comes down to it, there is no telling how many of us got to come home because of Charlie Berryhill taking us under his "wing" and helping us to cuss the RVN, the compass and the radios. Wonder if he ever did learn the difference between transmit and intercom? There were sure a lot of ground commanders that got the idea that Charlie thought that their GDFing head was full of rocks or nothing at all. Love that man. Jimmie West "Croc 2" 65-66 |

I was at Holloway from November 1966 until July 1967 with the 170th AHC and then as a DUSTOFF pilot with the 2nd Plt, 498th Med Co (Air Amb). I have some film footage of Holloway that I shot on Super 8 and then had transferred to VHS. Much of it was shot from the control tower so there is a good over-view of the base. I also have footage of a Caribou landing as an Army aircraft and leaving (a few days later) as an Air Force aircraft so the footage was shot around the 1st of the year in 1967. Name: Patrick J. Kelly Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Dothan, Alabama Time: 1999-07-15 16:24:11 Comments: The original unit was formed at Ft. Riley, Kansas in the fall of '58. I joined the unit in April of '58. The first designation was the 81st Transportation CO with the 545th Field Maintenance Detachment attached to it. The unit was later transferred to Hawaii and then to Vietnam in '61 or '62. After attending OCS and flight school, I was again assigned to the 81st in Vietnam. We were the first unit to have the CH-21s replaced by the UH-Bs. We were then redesignated the 119th Airmobile Co as part of the 52nd Aviation Bn. I have one of the original 81st grasshopper patches from Ft. Riley. It was designed by a highschool student from Junction City, Kansas (Contest). The next patch was similar to the 52nd Bn patch. It was not the one selected by the unit, the Bn Cdr directed us to use the one he picked! I was at the dedication of the airfield as Camp Holloway. It was a rainy day. BG Stillwell was supposed to make a freefall parachute jump into Holloway for the dedication but the weather was too bad. CWO Holloway gave me my night checkout at Ft. Carson Just prior to his departure to Nam . I am retired from the Army and currently (since 1978) working as an instructor pilot in primary at Ft. Rucker. The current contractor is Lear Siegler. |

From: Indiana Time: 1999-05-28 19:56:11 Comments: I am trying to find some guys who knew my brother, Gene Wentworth, who was a Buccaneer door gunner around 68-69. Please return mail if you knew him in Vietnam. We (his daughter Shannon and I) are trying to substantiate his combat wound (he said he was hit in the knee) to have his purple heart awarded to his mother. I am very sorry to say that he went down July 27, 1997. He was a fighter to the end. If you knew Gene please send any information you can to me. He was trying to get documentation for his battle wound together but was having trouble finding people who could verify his story. Thank you for your service to our Country and for helping with our work for Gene. Bill Wentworth, Shannon Wentworth |

Worked in the little office of the building materials depot along with Franklin Barnes and Whitson. I remember 1/4/67 the night two men lost their lives in the bunker down in the ammo dump along with one of our drivers working the night shift. Charlie walked in and blew up our office then went across the street to the generators and then went out. On his way out he set fire to the sand bag inventory that I had been trying to build up for several months. Also the toilet tissue he really knew where to hurt us. The next night one of the men from our squad died in the yard due to friendly fire. I can recall the night EOD got kicked out of the EM club then set off the tear gas. We were on 100% alert all night. Graves registration reefers were about 100ft from our tent. You could always tell when it got bad they fired up the second reefer. |

From: Time: 1999-05-12 21:52:47 Comments: I wish to thank you for building this web-site, it's been almost thirty years since I was stationed at Camp Holloway. I was with D Troop 7/17th, 50 cal.machine gunner on one of the jeeps. we escorted conveys. Before that I was walking point for our platoon, with the 25th Inf. before they stood down. I have alot of respect and I owe alot to all the men that ferried us around on the hueys. There is no other feeling like sitting on the side of the huey with your feet dangling in the clouds, and looking back and seeing a formation of choppers with the rest of your buddies. To this day every time I hear a chopper it makes my very being race with anticipation and gets the adreneline rushing. I was with the 3/22 25 inf.div. and spent alot of time on choppers, always coming in and out of LZ 's. To all the nameless door gunners and crews of those birds, I want to send a belated but very sincere THANK YOU.......... To the ends of my days and even to the great beyond I will sing the praises of your deeds............................just another "grunt" |

I was a pilot with the 57 th AHC in Kontum from Oct 68 to Oct 69. I remember spending a several days in Camp Holloway off and on during my tour. I never liked to crowding and real Army feel (for Vietman ofcourse), Kontum was a more wild place. (Rout step). I had a lot of flight school class mates in the units at Holloway and enjoyed running into them when I was there. 68-23 and 68-513 One of them was Scott Griswold who was killed in action. 189 th I think. I still remember him as a fun loving guy. When I visited the Wall in DC several years ago I put a rememberence of him near his name. Funny how I always remember Scott when I think of Vietman. Even though I had other friends killed there. Keep up the good work. The 57th has a web site too, linked from the VHPA site. Keep your turns up, Ken. |

Brown Website: Referred by: Via Search Engine From: Wasilla, Alaska Time: 1999-05-04 01:28:03 Comments: I was station at Camp Holloway in Pleiku in Sept 1964 with the 119TH, On Feb 6th 1965 We were getting ready for a Search and Destroy mission on Feb 7th that night we were hit. I can remember that one of the guys was assigned to man a 50 at the corner of the berm on the right side of the runway when the mortors started hitting He ran and got the 50,ammo, tripod and ran down to his position, had the 50 set up and manned before his ammo bearer was able to help him. When it was time to take the 50 back to the Armory he tried to do it by himself but it was to much for him. I had been flying as fill in Crew Chief for a while and I was going to get my own helo starting on the 7th for the S&D. But it was one of the helos that was destroyed by Sappers that night. I had traded Guard Duty that night with a friend so that I could be ready for the next day. I was not hurt but my friend was, He was in the Guard tent when a round came thru the tent, hit the concret pad and hurt just about all the guys there. I never saw him again. I was reassigned to the 155th at Camp Coryell in Ban Me Thuot. I have some pictures taken in Pleiku and Ban Me Thuot that I haven't look at since I got back but now I am working up to breaking them out and trying to put some names to them. I will need some help from You guys that were there with me from Sept 1964 to May or June? 1965 in Pleiku. May or June 65 thru Sept 1965 with the 155th in Ban Me Thout. At Camp Coryell I can remember that we had a cook that would make the heaters explode in the morning when he lite them up for cleaning our mess gear but some of the guys had a talk with him and it stopped. One other thing that I remember was one day we had a flight of Gun ships there rearming at noon time. The Helos were staggered one of the guys overrode the safeties some how and launched a rocket into the ship ahead of it. That broke the noon meal up, we thought that we were under attack so we scattered out to our perimeter then we found out that it was an accident that damaged the Helo. |
Name: John G. Sackis Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Illinois Time: 1999-05-02 09:41:10 Comments: I am posting this note on the 52nd Combat Aviation Battalion, the Camp Holloway, and the 282nd AHC web pages. I had to go back and look at my orders because I couldn’t remember some of the details of my service at Pleiku. I was assigned to the 52nd as a door gunner in December, 1965. I guess because of administrative requirements, I was actually assigned to 2nd platoon, 172nd Avn. Co., but attached to 52nd Aviation Battalion. Then in June, 1966, my assignment was changed to 2nd platoon, 282nd Avn. Co., but still attached to the 52nd. I still have my original Black Cat patch and wear it on a shooting jacket that I use for veteran events. I left Vietnam in August of 1966 since I was at the end of my enlistment. We flew many missions in the highlands both in support of the 25th Infantry and the Special Forces “B” team in Pleiku. In addition, we flew II Corp missions that included flying General Westmoreland a couple of times. We were the ones that often marked landing zones for the lift ships in operations west of Pleiku and Kontum. These web sites sure brought back a lot of memories! Thanks for being here! John G. Sackis (formerly Sp/4) |

We were quartered over by the l.s.a. area by where they had the civilians that worked for dynelectron that worked on the choppers. There were eight of us and I would like to hear from any of the guys that were there. Also would like to find bill walker that worked for P.A.E. as post engineers. Would like to hear from any of the 75th rangers that were there and at Qui-Nhon. This is a great site and I still remember the red clay and dust. Also all the good rides on the CH 47 and the way they went anywhere anytime and the heavy cover that the attack choppers gave us and a special thanks to the two gunships that saved us on 4-7-72 about nine clicks out of camp. |

Name: Ian Robertson Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Toronto, Canada Time: 1999-04-21 23:51:58 Comments: I didn't serve at all in Viet Nam as I was born in 1971 and grew up in Toronto. I wrote an essay about the war in an American History class at a Canadian university and fell in love with the subject. Upon graduating, I went over to Viet Nam to teach english in Saigon from Feb.'96 to Apr.'97. I met many veterans while there (both American & Australian), and had an awesome time. I spent three nights in a hotel in Pleiku during Feb.'97. I rode my motorbike down to the Special Forces' camp at Plei Me for a day trip and to gaze upon the Ia Drang valley. The closest I could get to Camp Holloway and II Field Force were the front entrances. The "new owners" have erected large signs that read, "Restricted Area -No Trespassing". There was a young communist soldier out front of Camp Holloway buying watermelons, but I didn't think it would be wise to attempt to sneak past him. An American friend of mine had been arrested on the grounds in mid '95 and detained over night. I'm really glad that the early history of the camp was included on this website. Very few books make any mention whatsoever about the specifics regarding particular airbases, camps, or fire support bases, they all seem to be too general and cater to the masses. I'll have to look for the book that was mentioned repeatedly on this website. You've done an outstanding job and have obviously spent a lot of time on this site. It may not mean very much coming from a young Canadian but, Welcome Home and Thanks. |
Name: Barb Website: Referred by: Via Search Engine From: MN Time: 1999-04-21 20:51:51 Comments: My brother was stationed in Pleiku from August 1967 to August 1968. He was in the Army, I don't have much info, my parents must have his tags. He took his life last May 31, 1998. I am seven years younger than him, so didn't get much of a chance to know him as I was only in 6th grade when he enlisted. We didn't see much of each other as adults either as he had lived in Las Vegas the past 17 years. Never married, somewhat of a recluse. We can only assume why he took his life, although I feel he spent 30 years in hell since coming home from Vietnam, and this was his only way to find peace. Tell me how I can locate people that knew him, I need to know more about this time in his life to make peace with myself. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I saw a special on NBC called Vietnam: Long Time Coming, about vets who returned and did a bike tour. There was a woman named Diane Carlson Evans that said she was in Pleiku and was there when her friend Sharon Lane died from shrapnel wounds. My brother was a medic, did boot camp at Fort Leonardwood, I think. His name is Gregory J Prochaska. Again any help would be appreciated. Thank YOU...Barb |
