Comments: Found no "Beavers" at your site. I had four pilots, four crew chiefs and four Beavers at Camp Holloway starting in December, 1970. Spent Christmas day cleaning revetments for my planes. Lived less than a week with 219th Headhunters and the moved my folks to the Special Forces compound down the hill from II Corps HQ. We communted to Holloway to do our flying. We were down at the end of the airfield where the Otters were kept.

Comments: Served at Camp Holloway from March 1967 to March 1968. I Was in the electric shop with Clearance Chilton. The unit was 405th maintenance detachment of the 170th AHC. After my replacement Steve Reed came in early, I flew gunner as needed for the 170th. At the time Major Christonson was our CO, and our top SGT was SGT Cline. SGT Hawkins was the tech inspector.

This is one of the best sites I have found, thanks for all the work. Like everyone else, it brings back good and bad memories. After a nervous breakdown 5 years ago, I joined VFW Post 5890 in Rio Rancho, and it has helped me being with comrades. I encourage anyone to try it.
Good luck to all. Would like to hear from anyone who remembers the times or me.

Comments: Gentlemen,

Our squadron was provided superior gun ship support during 1964 in Vietnam. One of your members, then Capt. now LtGen. USA (Ret), Jack "Dragon Six" Woodmansee was recommended for a Navy Cross by our awards board after a mission to Do Xa (15 miles west northwest of Quang Ngai)on 27 Apr 1964. The narrative of this mission may be read by visiting our web site and clicking on "History 2, as told by the Purple Foxes, then scrolling down to the date of 04-27-64 for the narrative.

We have been trying for some time to gather enough information to have the US Army award of a Single Mission Air Medal upgraded to the Navy Cross which was recommended. If you or any of your former Brothers were along on that day I would like to hear from you. Please give this wide publication. The lives of Marines and the successful completion of the mission have not been properly recognized on behalf of Jack Woodmansee.

Thank you,

Franklin A. Gulledge, Jr. Maj.USMC(Ret)

Comments: I am searching for anyone who may have known my cousin, Herndon Arrington Bivens who served with Security Platoon, 52nd CAB, 17th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade. His service in-country began 12/07/69 and his last mission took place on 4/15/70 in the Kontum Province II Corps performing the duty as Pathfinder. He was on a mission with fellow Pathfinder, Rosendo Montana, who was mortally wounded during the operation. WO Roger A. Miller was also with Herndon during this operation and was captured with Herndon by the North Vietnamese. It is believed Herndon died of injuries while in the custody of the North Vietnamese.
I would like to obtain any information I can on Herndon. I am producing a possible docu-film on his life and any assistance I can receive will be greatly appreciated.
I want to thank Jesse for providing guidance in my search - Thank you Jesse!!!

Comments: Just for the sake of discussion not argument or any disrespect, a question I have been putting to all the WWII vets I know is this: "you guys and gals fought for total victory, unconditional surrender, period the end. Why then when you got in control of the government did you condemn your sons and daughters to less than that in The Nam?" Some are embarrassed, some are down right angry about the conduct of the "Nam experience", and some just stare at me, as to say "was there any other conflict but the "big one". And then I thank them for their service to this great country and for ensuring my great childhood (albeit) poor, free. Not one, not one WWII vet has ever thanked me or my brothers for their service. Great site!!!!!!!!!!!

Comments: In '66 and '67, I was a First Class Petty Officer in the US Navy. I was the only sailor in the Pleiku "metropolitan" area. My reason for being there is another story. I frequently was provided transportation out of and into Camp Holloway. I resided at the MACV compound in Pleiku, but traveled all over the central highlands. Also did some time at the forward base camp (Up-lift Alfa, I think) of the 3rd/25th. This very fine site brought back a lot of memories, some fond, some not so fond. Wish I could recall the names of my roommates in Pleiku. One was Special Forces the other a Ranger. The name SFC Robert (Bobby) Helms may have been one. Also had a roomie by the name of Dick Deneen who was a USAF MSGT. Again, this is a great site and I am sure there are thousands of vets that appreciate the memories as much as I. Thanks.

Comments: Served with HHC 88th SS BN from Oct 67-Jun 69. We moved from Holloway in late 1968 if I remember right. I got to ride backseat with 219th (Headhunter's) quite a bit. I can only remember several pilots Cambell-Murphy-DeBord. If DeBord reads this I'm the one who threw the mail sacks out the window and it stuck on the tail. Great site will be back.

Comments: great site. I served with the lst Infantry Divison and on MAT teams 49 and 86 in 68 and 69. Does anyone out there have any information on the 557th S & S at Pleiku in l972. Am trying to help fellow vet with PTSD claim, who claims the base was mortared at that time and also the VC turned the claymores around on the peremiter and the ammo dump was blown up.

thanks

Good job on the site.
To bad we didn't have this when we came home. Maybe the letters PTSD wouldn't be as scary.

Comments: Thanks I appreciate this website.

I was in the area of Ben Het and Dak To in '68. I was injured by a GOER crossing a small river en route to Dak To. We were enroute to Dak To from a supply run to Ben Het. The GOER transport vehicle went off the bridge and I was pinned in the river under it. I recall aerial photos taken immediately after the accident while I was still pinned under the GOER in the river. A helicopter attempted to lift the GOER off of me but was unable to do so, and called for a wrecker. The wrecker couldn't lift it and then the helicopter called for an M-88 tank retriever. (I don't know who the helicopter crew, M-88 crew, or wrecker driver was, but would like to thank them all here.)

I was taken to the field hospital at Dak To and the medical exam results didn't get put in my medical files. I am currently trying to file for disability from injuries sustained in the accident. I would appreciate anyone who has any information, pictures or memories of the incident. I'm having a big problem making a case with VA on the injuries I sustained in the accident. It was about Nov '68.
