I was with the 573rd S&S Co. DS from Aug 66 thru Sept. 67. Our unit was newly formed at Fort Campbell, Ky and moved as a unit aboard the troop carrier USNS Gen.William S. Weagle. I remember how quiet everyone got when the LSU was about to land at Qhi Non. Our unit was made up of a Class 1, Class 2&4, Class 3 (POL),Class 5,a laundry and bath platoon, and a graves registeration platoon. I was in the POL Section and was the one who ordered fuel to be brought by convoy to Pleiku area. I oftened stood on the road by Camp Holloway to separate the convoy and send fuel on to New Pleiku Air Force and also to Class 3 at Camp Holloway. Although I did not fly the aircraft and be in direct contact with the pilots and crews, I still had a small part in the lives of them that bore the brunt of the fighting there. I enjoyed this site and I hope to contact some old friends because of it. It will always be in my thoughts and hardly a day goes by that I don't think of the men and women that didn't get to come home with us. Thanks for making my day. I would welcome anyone who would like to correspond and exchange old (War Stories) like the night, while on guard duty, at the POL yard during dense fog, we saw movement and began firing for about 15 minutes and when daylight came we found 17 dead water buffalo out side our perimeter. These kind of stories are the ones I try tell to my children and grandchildren as it is easier to tell. Thanks again for maintaining this site and hope to here from old buddies soon. |
